How can I check the quality of a fish oil supplement?

Look for the lot number on the packaging and ask the supplier for the corresponding certificate of analysis. If the amount of the undesirable substances (pesticides, heavy metals, dioxins and furans) is below the legal limits, you can consider the product as safe. Apart from the presence of undesirable substances the peroxide value (max. 10 mEq/kg) is important. This value expresses the level of peroxidation of the fatty acids. The peroxidation or rancidness of the fats indicates how the omega-3 fatty acids were preserved throughout the production process. Make sure to receive a certificate of analysis that corresponds with the lot number and not an old certificate with standard values that is reused again and again.
